Team Name: Sri Lanka
2011 Result: 14th
Currently ranked 24th in the world* Sri Lanka will be making their ninth World Cup appearance at NWC2015.
Qualifying for NWC2015 by claiming second place behind Singapore at the Asian Qualification Tournament last year, Sri Lanka will be looking to better their highest World Cup finish of ninth place in Sydney, which they achieved at the first event held in Eastbourne, England, in 1963.
Competing as Ceylon in 1963, the nation did not compete in the event for 20 years before returning to contest netball’s ultimate title as Sri Lanka (which they were renamed in 1972), in Singapore in 1983.
After a 14th place finish in 1983, Sri Lanka went on to compete in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1987, finishing 16th, Sydney in 1991, where they finished 15th, and Birmingham, England, in 1995, finishing 19th.
At the 1999 event in Christchurch, New Zealand, Sri Lanka achieved their best result, finishing 21st with 26 nations competing (although this is a lower rank than previous results, relative to the amount of nations competing this amounts the nation’s best performance).
Finishing 14th in Singapore in 2011, Sri Lanka will be looking for an improved ranking in 2015, contesting Pool C with fellow Asian qualifiers Singapore, and African heavyweights, Malawi and South Africa.
